Tutorial: Scrappy Strips Technique

In last week’s post about Stashbuster cards, I promised I’d show you how to do the Scrappy Strips technique to use up those last little pieces of your DSP. This technique was created by Bruno Bertucci in Australia; he was inspired by a piece of Aboriginal art and wanted to create a card based on it.

And so the Scrappy Strips technique was born! It’s a fun and easy technique that is perfect for using up your scraps. Read on to learn how it’s done!

You will need:
A cardbase of 5.5 x 8.5″
2 pieces of cardstock 4 x 5.25″ (same colour)
DSP scraps, about 4-5″ in length, and any width

 

 

 

 

 

Cut your DSP scraps at random angles. Don’t overthink it!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Attach one piece of DSP with a straight edge right up against the straight edge of the cardstock. The DSP may hang over at the top and bottom of the cardstock, but it shouldn’t hang over the side.

 

 

 

 

Continue attaching scraps, arranging them so that a thin border of the cardstock shows in between the scraps. Again, the scraps will hang over the top and bottom of the cardstock.

Keep going until you have covered your cardstock. It’s fine if your DSP hangs over the edge on this side, too.

Now it’s time to trim down this cardstock. Remember that we started with one piece of DSP that lined up straight on the cardstock – this gives us a straight edge to line up in the paper trimmer and cut off the DSP scraps that hang over the edge.

Then, make two more cuts to trim your cardstock piece down to 3.75 x 5″.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Your other piece of cardstock – the one that still measures 5 x 4.25″ – is going to layer behind your DSP scraps piece. If you’re like me, you might want to do some die-cutting out from the middle before you attach these two together.

 

 

 

 

 

Finally, assemble your card and decorate as desired.
